Types of Retaining Structure

Hello, friends today I am going to share about the types of retaining structure.
                               Types of Retaining Structure

1. Retaining walls:-

Retaining walls are relatively rigid walls used for supporting        the soil mass

TYPES OF RETAINING WALLS –
a. Gravity retaining walls

b. Semi-gravity retaining walls

c. Cantilever retaining walls

d. Counter fort retaining walls

a. Gravity Retaining walls:– these walls depend upon their weight for stability, the walls are usually constructed of plain concrete at masonary. Such walls are not economical for large heights.

b. Semi- gravity retaining walls:- the size of the section of a gravity retaining walls may be reduced if a small amount of reinforcement is provided near the back face. Such walls are known as semi-gravity retaining walls.

c. Cantilever retaining walls:-  these are made of R.C.C. the wall consists of a thin stem and a base slab cast monolithically (up to 6 to 8 m.)

d. Counterfort retaining walls:- counterfort retaining walls have thin vertical slabs, known as counterfort, spaced across the vertical stem at regular interval, the counterforts tie the vertical stem with the base stem. These walls are economical for a height more than 6to 8 m.

2. Sheet pile walls or bulkheads- These are the special type of earth retaining structures in which a continuous wall is constructed by joining sheet piles. Sheet piles are made of timber, steel or RCC.

TYPES OF SHEET PILE WALLS-

a. Free cantilever sheet pile
b. Cantilever sheet pile
c. Anchored sheet pile

a. Free cantilever sheet pile:- it is a sheet pile subjected to a concentrated horizontal load at its top. There is above the dredge level.

b. Cantilever sheet pile:- it retains backfills at a higher level on a side.

c. Anchored sheet pile:- the anchors provide a suitable level for the stability of sheet pile.
